Behind the relentless narrative of economic growth and nickel downstreaming lies the toil and hardship of the workers who carry the weight of this industrialization. Our latest progress investigative report, “From Long Working Hours, to Sudden Death”, reveals the deadly working conditions within one of Indonesia’s nickel industrial belts in North Maluku, specifically in Weda Bay. Our findings show how long working hours, combined with exposure to dust, noise, and extreme temperatures, have created a silent health crisis that is silently damaging workers’ bodies and futures.
This report is the result of observations, in-depth interviews, assistance support, and collaborative hazard exposure measurements conducted with workers at PT IWIP in Central Halmahera, North Maluku. PT IWIP is one of the world’s largest nickel processing industrial park operators. As of January 2025, it was recorded to have 82,255 employees, not including workers brought in from China. From this number, an estimated 13 percent or more are female workers, whose perspectives are also crucial to highlight.
Beyond exposing the poor working conditions, this report also illustrates the complex and burdensome process workers must endure to prove an Occupational Illness. Through this report, we strive to present and amplify the narratives of workers who are fighting to reclaim authority over their own bodies and health.
